VOCABULARY


     Scientific Method - steps that are useful in in scientific study

 

     Hypothesis-  An explanation based on observed facts or an idea of how things work.

 

     Trade-offs-  Making decisions about giving up one thing in favor of another

 

     ethics  -  The process that applies right and wrong to people and their actions

 

    evidence  -  observable proof  

 

       Inference- is an attempt to explain or interpret observations or to identify the cause of what was observed.

 

     clinical trial -  research study conducted with patients, usually to evaluate a new treatment or drug

  

        control  -  A group in a scientific experiment where the factor being tested is not applied so that it may serve as a standard for comparison against another group where the factor is applied.

  

     placebo  -  a control that simulates a medicine, but doesnt' have the active ingredient in it

 

      sample size -  amount being tested

   

     simulation - an experience that is meant to mimic, or be like, another experience

 

     informed consent-  participants have to sign a form that states that they have been informed of

                                            the risks of the clinical trial.

     placebo effect- The improvement in health of people receiving placebos.

 

     variable - The single factor being testing in a scientific experiment.

 

     nervous system   Your brain, spinal cord, nerves which are the control center for your entire body. Your brain uses information it receives from your nerves to coordinate all of your actions and reactions.

 

     reproducible able to repeat or conduct an experiment with an identical procedure

 

    Qualitative Data  data which describes properties or characteristics that are used to identify things (color, sound, smell, pain, sight, touch, taste etc.)

 

     Quantitative Data   data with values that have been measured or counted  "number or amount" ( speed, weight, temperature, heart rate, etc.)
